UI

I am actually really liking the process of making UI, and really thinking about what works and what doesn't. I couldn't get a design document on it, so I did my own research. I really liked the far right mini map, where you can see the lantern thief and his distance meter. However it got turned down as an idea, because it would be too much for our UI programmer.  I think the final one is definitely influenced by Bioshock.

Commissions!

Here's some before and afters. Both were commissions. The first is for a Lab dealing whit plankton. This is their mascot. The one below is for a blog.  They paid someone else to do the one on the left, and asked me to clean it up. I pretty much started from scratch since it did not capture the couple's likeness.

Scholarship to CEDEC Tokyo and GDC Europe

So I am missing out on Japan's biggest game developer conference and GDC Europe which is is Cologne, Germany this year. Although I was really honored to get these scholarships from IGDA it would not be responsible for me to buy such an expensive plane ticket. I already made a commitment to be a volunteer at SIGGRAPH. It was a nice confidence booster, and I was told I should apply again next year. I am hoping maybe GDC will work out. Apparently you can apply up to 6 months after graduating.  I think I am most sad about missing out on a mentor. I asked to have a female mentor and was really looking forward to it. It's okay though. I must stay positive, and I think SIGGRAPH will be great for me.

The Happy Mask Salesman

I really wanted to do a character with hand painted textures. The Happy Mask Salesman is from the Zelda series.  I put my own twist on him by making him a little lankier, and creepier.  As a 12 year old he definitely made an impact on me (He has some frightening animations). My friend Anthony made a rig for him (for his own portfolio piece) which is what let me pose him so easily.

Above is the original concept and the original 64 bit character.
